KOTA KINABALU: Pulau Gaya islanders have been advised to isolate themselves for the next three weeks to reduce social contact with outsiders amid the Covid-19 outbreak.
Sabah police commissioner Datuk Zaini Jass said it is unnecessary for the island community to leave their homes or move about, as doing so would impede the state’s efforts to so-called “flatten the infection curve”.
Speaking to reporters after conducting a security visit to Kampung Lok Urai on Pulau Gaya, today, Zaini also said that the state government will send food supply to the island to ensure the people get their daily needs.
Meanwhile, he said that since the enforcement of the Movement Control Order (MCO), 13 men have been arrested for non-compliance.
“Although the figure is small, it should create a sense of awareness among the public not to go against the order,” he said, adding that the arrests were made in Kota Kinabalu (3), Kudat (8), Kinabatangan (1) and Kunak (1).
Zaini noted that those arrested were locals who were picked up under Section 186 of the Penal Code for obstructing public servants from discharging their duties; Section 22 of the Prevention and Control of Infectious Diseases Act; and Section 26(2) of the Police Act.
As of yesterday, two people have been charged in court, with one slapped with 10 months’ imprisonment, while another fined RM6,000 in default of 10 months’ jail.
When asked about concerns by budget hotel owners over attempted break-ins at vacant hotel premises, Zaini said police have been intensifying security rounds.
“If everyone complies with the MCO, there should be no issue of people trying to break into (premises). Unless it is done by hotel workers and the management is unaware of this.
“Having said that, the police will continue to increase our patrols. So far, we have not received reports on hotels being broken into,” he added.
