Myanmar to evacuate over 1000 pilgrims from Gaya - Eleven Myanmar

Myanmar is planning to evacuate over 1,000 pilgrims from Gaya as India announced on March 11 that it barred the entry of tourists to India starting from March 13 to April 15 to prevent the spread of COVID-19 virus, said Maung Maung Myint, Chair of Bodh Gaya Pilgrimage Committee.

“We knew about it around 10 pm on March 11 and received confirmation from the Indian embassy official today. The Gaya pilgrimage trip is a 15-day trip and pilgrims can cancel it. Pilgrims who have visited Gaya from the end of February to early March need to return. Two Indian airlines are operating regular flights to Gaya and two Myanmar airlines: Myanmar National Airlines and Myanmar Airways International are operating chartered flights to Gaya. At the present, there are over 1,000 Myanmar pilgrims are in Gaya and we will evacuate them daily. We will negotiate with airlines and tourism companies to take them back. They all will be evacuated within seven or ten days,” he said.

The Bodh Gaya Pilgrimage Committee under the Ministry of Religious Affairs announced an emergency statement dated March 12 after the Indian government announced they have banned tourists holding passports and visas to India.

The announcement said the Indian embassy in Yangon and Indian Consulate in Mandalay confirmed the ban of entry to India. It notified pilgrims not to enter through Sonauli, a border gate between India and Nepal, to Nepal and the pilgrims already arrived in Nepal need to enter India by March 12.
