
All 2,548 Myanmar pilgrims in Gaya will be evacuated by March 18 through chartered and regular fights, according to Maung Maung Myint, Chair of Bodh Gaya Pilgrimage Committee.
Myanmar planned to evacuate over 1,000 pilgrims from Gaya as India announced on March 11 that it barred the entry of tourists to India starting from March 13 to April 15 to prevent the spread of COVID-19 virus.
According to negotiation between three Bodh Gaya package tour companies and the Bodh Gaya Pilgrimage Committee, 1,152 Myanmar pilgrims will be evacuated by MAI chartered flights under the arrangement of Myanmar Gateway Travels & Tours Company and 800 pilgrims will be evacuated by MNA chartered flights and Indigo scheduled flights under the arrangement of Thit Shwe Sin Groups of Companies.
A total of 596 Myanmar pilgrims will be returned to Myanmar with MNA chartered flights, Indigo scheduled flights and Air India scheduled flights under the arrangement of Gracious Vacation Co. Ltd.
The Bodh Gaya Pilgrimage Committee under the Ministry of Religious Affairs announced an emergency statement dated March 12 after the Indian government announced they have banned tourists holding passports and visas to India.
The announcement said the Indian embassy in Yangon and Indian Consulate in Mandalay confirmed the ban of entry to India. It notified pilgrims not to enter through Sonauli, a border gate between India and Nepal, to Nepal and the pilgrims already arrived in Nepal need to enter India by March 12.
The Bodh Gaya Pilgrimage Committee urged all Myanmar pilgrims in India to contact their agents and the committee to be evacuated.
