Bandh supporters defy ban, cops play cool in Gaya - Times of India
GAYA: As thousands of bandh supporters converged on Gaya roads in complete defiance of the ban imposed on processions, the district police played it cool. On their part, the bandh supporters did not resort to any violence. Contrary to apprehensions, the total bandh remained incident free. Schools remained closed, banks had very little transaction and but for a cyclist/biker here and there, several roads and streets wore deserted look.
At some places bandh supporters put up bamboo barricades. The cops did not use any force to get those barricades removed. Earlier, on Wednesday, the Sadar SDO banned all processions in the sub divisional area.
Though massive deployment of force including central forces was made, the cops were apparently under instruction to ensure peace without provoking the bandh supporters. The strategy worked fine, feel Gaya watchers.
Though medical facilities were kept off the bandh purview, patients and attendants had a really hard time on account of non pliance of vehicles.
According to district magistrate Abhishek Singh, no report of any untoward incident has been received anywhere from the district. Asked if anybody has been arrested or detained, the DM said that the need to resort to coercive action did not arise. The bandh was unprecedented, claimed Vijay Kumar Mithu, a member of the All India Congress Committee.
